What to do in Melbourne

Melbourne!

This city is often missed by backpackers because it’s so far from well-traveled east coast! If you have the opportunity to Melbourne, it’s definitely worth the trek! It has a way different feel than Sydney or Brisbane, and the weather is a little cooler (which is nice in the summer months because the east coast can get insanely hot!) Here’s some of the top things to do while you’re here:

Brunching

The #1 thing that Melbourne is known for is it’s cafe culture. While you’re here you’ll notice that there’s a ridiculous amount of brunch places full of avocado toast and eggs bennys! You HAVE to eat at a few while you’re here or you’ll be missing out on the best brunch of your life!

There’s so many places to choose from, but one of my favourites that I went to was a place called Higher Ground. The interior of this place is so beautiful, it makes the food taste even that much better!

Sight Seeing

The main train station Flinders Street Station is a site in itself. It’s beautiful and is Australia’s oldest train station!

St. Kilda Beach is a small beach in comparison to the ones in Sydney, but it’s the best one in Melbourne! It’s a little ways outside of the main city, but worth the trip for the day if you want to catch some rays and relax!

The TOP THING to do during your stay in Melbourne is to drive along Great Ocean Road and see The Twelve Apostles! It’s about a 3 hour drive from Melbourne – if you don’t have a car there’s bus trips you can book for the day! The drive through the countryside to get there is beautiful – a little taste of the outback without going too much into the boonies!

Once you reach the location of the 12 apostles, there’s spots where you can walk down and go onto the beach if it’s low tide! Loch Ard Gorge is a beautiful little inlet about 3 minutes down the road! It’s a great place to walk down and lay on the sand for a bit!

Shopping

One thing that I did a lot of while I was here was SHOPPING! If you take the tram into the city, get off at Flinder’s Station and you’ll be right in the heart of the shopping district! There’s a few malls here: Galleria Shopping Mall, Melbourne Central, and Bourke Street Mall.  I’m someone who likes to buy clothes abroad (Canada’s clothing stores don’t cut it for me anymore) so I like to shop a lot when I travel! I feel so cool when someone asks where I got it and I can ‘Thanks, I got it in Australia~’ haha.

Go to the Races

One of the most famous things to do while in Melbourne is go to a horse race at Flemington Racecourse. I was lucky that while I was here it was Emirates Stakes Day! (This is a super big race for those of you that don’t know!) It was a super fun day – everyone was dressed to the nines and wearing those fancy headpieces. Definitely a fun experience if you’ve never been to something like this before!

That’s Melbourne in a nutshell! Thanks for reading 🙂
