What to do in Auckland
Auckland!
It’s the largest city in the country (however it’s not the capital – Wellington is!) with plenty to see and do in the area! It’s surrounded by water on both sides with lots of little islands you can visit for the day.
Here’s some of my favourite things to do in the city and the surrounding area:
Mt. Eden
This is the highest natural point in Auckland. This area has beautiful gardens and volcanic cones with views of the city! This is also where the All-Blacks play if you’re here during their rugby season.
Rangitoto Island
This is a beautiful volcanic island that you can hike up! Once at the top you get amazing views of the Auckland coastline. It’s not a difficult hike up so don’t be scared to go here!
Waiheke Island
Waiheke is an island best known for its wineries and beaches. To get here you take a 35 min ferry from the downtown Auckland port. On the island there’s lots of hostels and beach houses if you want to stay overnight!
This island is way bigger than you think – get a bus pass to get around the city (I opted to walk and regretted my decision instantly). There’s lots of beautiful beaches – Oneroa beach being my favourite! At the top of the beach there’s a strip of clothing boutiques, ice cream shops, and delicious restaurants!
Queen Street Shopping
This is the main street in the city with tons of shops! I stocked up here before heading down on my trip.
Sky Tower
This is the iconic tower of Auckland – similar to the CN Tower in Toronto, you can do a sky walk along the ledge of the tower! There’s also a restaurant inside with panoramic views of the city.
The Harbour
A lot of people visit only the South Island when they travel New Zealand, but I would highly recommend visiting the North and exploring the beautiful city of Auckland!
See my ‘New Zealand in a Month‘ post to read what else I did on the North Island
